Masaba Gupta says she was called ‘bas** child’ at school, catcalled by boys

Designer-actor Masaba Gupta was brought up by her single mother, actor Neena Gupta. In a recent podcast with Faye D’Souza, Masaba shared how she was catcalled by boys at school and called a “bast*** child” when she was in seventh grade. She also opened up about the struggles her mother Neena Gupta faced during her pregnancy, as her parents did not support her since she was pregnant out of wedlock.
Masaba shared that Neena’s parents didn’t support her when she was pregnant with Masaba “because it was out of wedlock.” She added, “My father, Viv Richards, wasn’t around, and friends were around, but it was not the same; everyone had their own life. She couldn’t tell people that she was pregnant with me, so she had to hide her pregnancy. She didn’t have money. When I asked her how she managed through all of this, she just said, ‘I was very happy to have a child of my own. I had no clue how I would bring you up.’”
Asked if her parents’ past led to any discrimination against her at school, Masaba said, “It was used against me 100 per cent. It was public, and it was very interesting because the kids would speak about it like adults. I could hear them repeating something they heard in their house. One kid went on to say, ‘Hey bast***, I believe you are a bast*** child.’ This was when I was in the 7th grade. A lot of people also didn’t understand how I looked physically or why I looked like that.”
Masaba, who is expecting her first child with husband, actor Satyadeep Mishra, hardly made any friends in school and preferred to stay in a bubble.
“There was a lot of catcalling from the boys about my body. I was a professional tennis player, so I had these broad shoulders and ripped arms and legs. I also developed very early, so I was not dainty or feminine, so it was like, where is this thing from? I was very happy in my own bubble in school; I did my own thing. I didn’t make great friends in school, which I regret apart from 2-3 of them,” Masaba mentioned.
Masaba, popular as a fashion designer, made a successful acting debut with the Netflix show Masaba Masaba. It also featured her mother, Neena Gupta.
